Buildings often outlast their original function. Emptiness and abandonment bring dramatic changes in the life of a building, but at the same time, those spaces can be inspiring. The loss of function of buildings designed to fulfill special requirements is inevitable. Still, in many cases, the lack of intellectual and financial resources, or common will, an unexpected social and political turn, cause that buildings remain isolated. Wherever we go in the country, we can see that many valuable buildings wait for their fate among the new buildings growing out from the ground, which most often means their demolition. Architects must preserve our identity rooted in the built heritage, save values, and continue the built environment's evolutionary processes. Preservation is only reasonable by giving a new function for the building, as the goal is not just conservation but reuse. Protection must go hand in hand with creative work; we have to use the opportunities of combining the old and the new. Several transformations in the world show that this is possible, and fortunately, some refreshing renewals have already taken place in Hungary as well. Let's increase the number of good examples; let's reuse exciting, abandoned buildings!
As we design into existing spaces, it might be obvious to build from prefabricated or even modular elements to use light, expandable, removable structures. Let's focus on the architectural aspects of finding new functions and creating a program for existing buildings. What is the location suitable for? What can the existing structure and space easily accommodate?
Until the start of the first thematic semester dealing with inhabitation, we will present abandoned industrial buildings on the social networks of the department, and our recommendations will also include buildings documented with plans. At the same time, personal motivation is essential, so you can apply for the course with any abandoned building you find.
Projects in the Residential Building Department are individual works, but occasionally students can work also in groups. In this case, the beginning of the semester (conceptional decisions) is a group work, but at the second half of the semester (to design the building itself) has to be individual work.

Instructions about the application:
You have to submit a portfolio, and you have to arrange an appointment with the selected consultation teachers to have a short introduction. This semester both will work online. You can submit your application HERE. Deadline: 2021. 06. 11. 12:00
The period for the introductory conversation is between the 11th of June, and the 18th of June. The results of the application will be published on the webpage of the department on the 18th of June.
For the Comprehensive design 2 course there is no application procedure. You only have to submit on NEPTUN.
